Higher education has always been considered a pathway to success, but with rising tuition fees and job markets favoring skills over degrees, is it really necessary anymore?

Some argue that a degree opens doors to better opportunities and higher pay, while others believe self-learning, trade skills, and experience are more valuable.

What do you guys think? Is university still a must-have in 2025?

Honestly speaking, where I work, everyone has a degree. However, I can't recall anyone who came in who actually used anything they've learned, and most are just friends of friends (nepotism), and can barely function on their own. If I were to hire someone myself however, I would base it more on skills and experience, than simply university learning (which is also a growing trend among colleagues in different companies)

Depends on the field but it definitely helps you avoid being filtered out from the get-go

Great question! I think higher education can still be valuable, especially for careers that require specialized knowledge or credentials. However, with rising costs and the growth of skill-based jobs, alternatives like trade schools, certifications, and self-learning are becoming more attractive and practical. Ultimately, it depends on your goals, industry, and learning style. University isn’t a must-have for everyone anymore, but it can still open important doors if chosen wisely. What’s your take?

Depends on the degree. 20 years out of college and I've been extremely pleased with what my engineering degree has provided. My older sister, a school teacher who graduated from the same university I did, may not say the same.
