I just wanted to propose an idea of letting avatar pictures to accept gif and adding gif banners to our personal profiles? Also the avatar 'template' shows as an circle portrait; would be nice to remove this restriction and make it into a 'square template' so the images won't look too distorted? This would be awesome.

Also it would be great if the site was all dark mode instead.

The postbit is coded exclusively for circle avatars. Fits better on mobile, etc.
As for a dark theme, there will be one on the v3 version of the site coming up, but nothing on v2 as that requires a complete overhaul of the UI
