As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.

How do you feel about this news?

I'm a game collector, so I'm not pleased about it. However, the worst part is Playstation having their own little walled garden via the Playstation Store, with no point of entry except through them. I can't count the times I got a physical copy of a game cheaper than what PS had on the store.

And on PC, you can get game keys for games, you aren't stuck always buying from GOG or Steam or whoever directly. Sony will set the prices for their store and have zero competition. And as we saw with the movies they removed recently, you're just renting your games from them, they can and will take them away whenever they want.

PS5 is looking like my last console. If I have to go digital only, I'll just play on PC, where game saves and modding are common and easy, unlike consoles.

yeah, was thinking making the PS5 my last console too after the new Sony doing this nonsense
(I did have my heart set on the PS6 when it comes out)

I made a Steam account 3 years this August coming, I had just recently been playing games on steam to get use to it
and I got all these games dirt cheap like a few £'s

I'm ready to purchase BF1, BF3m BF4 and BF Hardline all for £1.74 each (which these games are usually £35+ each)

so yeah, looks like it's going to be bye bye PS5, and hello Steam for me

my ps plus is up for renewal in November, but that's not going to happen now

Mine is up next month. I'm going to renew it one more time because I don't want to lose access to all the "free" games I've accumulated since 2013. I plan to clear out my back log of PS+ games and in August 2027, just before they kill physical games, I'll officially move to PC when my PS+ comes up for renewal again.
